31 Days of Make Believe: Meet Amy, Day 3

Amy Lupold Bair is best known as the Resourceful Mommy. It's the moniker that she uses when posting comments on blogs, tweeting on Twitter(@ResourcefulMom), etc. It is taken directly from the name of her blog. Amy's hope is that the material that she writes is not only readable, but also resourceful in some way.

Amy writes mostly about issues surrounding being a mom. The topics range from tricks of the trade to nutritional advice to very serious health related issues. She also throws in the occasional fun piece as well. Recently Amy has been writing about a topic that she's developing into a book – Women and the choices we must make in our quest to “have it all,” and how we are able to utilize social media to finally get there. Amy writes at her own blog, Resourcful Mommy, Type-A Mom as the Suburban Home Editor, and Blissfully Domestic as a Family Bliss Contributor.

*Now for the Make Believe Part*

What did you always want to be when you grew up as a kid? Why?

When I was a kid I played “job” pretend frequently. I was raised by a stay-at-home dad along with my brother, two and a half years my senior. I think that I often needed to entertain myself and creating jobs was a fun way to do it. Here are just a few that I remember: adoption agency (stuffed animals for orphans), secretary, ballerina, store, doctor’s office, car wash attendant. No really.

When I actually thought about what to become in real life, I always dreamed big. For some reason my plans ranged from artsy (Broadway piano accompanist) to uber-professional (pediatric oncologist). The two constants over the many years of my life have been my desire to be a mother and a writer. I wrote my own versions of my favorite magazines in elementary school and began writing a novel called Seaside Slaughter in my tween years. And those pretend adoption agencies? I always ended up adopting all of the stuffed animals myself. ?

What is your favorite fairy tale and why?

As a child I remember reading the story of Snow-White and Rose-Red over and over again. I can even picture the illustrations all these years later. I think that what I liked best about the story was the fact that the girls were rewarded for their kindness to a frightening, but desperately cold bear by finding true love and happiness.

It is the night of the big ball. The one you are destined to marry is among the crowd, so you’ve dressed your best. Describe your outfit.

The closest I’ve ever come to the big ball was my wedding day, so let me describe my wedding dress. It was ivory, made of very heavy fabric, off the shoulders with a v-neck. Below the bodice, the skirt gathered in a very Elizabethan way. Wearing that dress and dancing with my new husband was the most beautiful I have ever felt in my life.

Your life has been selected to be featured in an upcoming fairy tale style movie. What is the title and premise?

The Diamond in the Rough – A young, studious man – not overly interested in affairs of the heart – catches the eye of the young lady in love with love, but unlucky in love. She sees in him what others have not, and he looks past what others have seen. Together they choose happily ever after.

You need to be rescued. Where are you and what is going on around you? Describe the scene as your hero approaches.

I need to be rescued? First of all, I don’t ever need to be rescued. I’m the resourceful mommy! But let’s keep this real….

The queen is attempting a quick standing-up diaper change when suddenly she realizes that – what’s this? – a stealth poop is waiting to foil her plans. While begging the giggling toddler to remain still, holding the unfastened diaper with one hand, and reaching desperately for wipes with the other, cries of pain ring out from the pre-schooler’s room. The princess has fallen from her tower and hurt herself. Through the sound of giggles and yelps, one more unmistakable sound rings out – the sound of a cat and a hairball. But just then she hears what sounds like a key in a door! Could it be? Yes it is! Daddy is home from work….
