Embracing My Power as a Woman

I sat down to write this blog post shortly after recording a couple of interviews for my podcast that is launching at the end of month. I spent today talking with three incredible women who show the utmost grit and tenacity and didn’t give up on what they want.

I loved talking to them. It’s energizing to me to talk with strong women who know what they want.

I used to be terrified of powerful women. And by powerful, I don’t mean that they had power over me, but that they OWNED their individual power.

These women had an air about them that told me that they were going to change the world in one way or another.

These women have a deep sense of purpose and they go after their dreams.

There is just something different about these women.

So, now I’m sitting in my home office, writing this post, wondering what I should say.

I have Shakira’s song Whenever, Wherever playing in my head, which of course makes me think about the Super Bowl show.

With all the backlash and hoopla about that performance, I’ve come to one major conclusion: women should support each other.

I have spent most of my life being afraid of other women. I have automatically assumed that if a woman looked more put together than me, then she was ultimately superior to me.

I have been intimidated by women who were intelligent and well-spoken, guessing that if I opened my mouth even once, then would figure out that I was a fraud and that I didn’t belong in their circle.

How much time have I wasted worrying about this stuff?

How many friendships did I miss out on because I was more concerned with being “found out” by women who, in all likelihood, were scared of the exact same thing.

How many connections did I pass on because I assumed that I had nothing to add?

Most likely? A lot.

In the last couple years, I have made a concentrated effort to embrace my differences with other women and try to really get to know them.

I have started conversations that would have been too overwhelming.

I’ve booked podcast interviews with women that have powerful stories.

Because I’m finally embracing my own power.

And when I did that, I started to recognize the power in other women.

How much would the world change if women stopped fighting against each other and instead decided to support each other?

Kudos to J. Lo and Shakira.

Kudos to all the mamas out there doing something out of the ordinary.

Kudos to the women who have decided to stay home with their children in lieu of pursuing a career.

Kudos to the women who climb the executive ladder so that they can see higher and farther.

Kudos to the women who have crazy ideas.

You are my kind of my people.
