Book Review: Closer Than Your Skin

Recently, I had the pleasure of reading Closer Than Your Skin by Susan Hill. An even greater pleasure was meeting her in person and having the opportunity to discuss the book with her and other women.

Simply put, this book is amazing. Susan writes in a manner that makes you feel as though she is sitting right across the table from you, sipping coffee, and reveling in happy moments from your past. The tone of this book suits the topic perfectly considering it is all about intimacy with God.

In general, many of us who strive for this level of relationship with God find it to be a mystery, something unattainable and only for the most spiritual people among us. It is something that a lot of us are either too afraid to go after or too uncertain that we will be granted permission to have such a relationship. But Susan tells us that this is not true.

What I love most about this book is its simplicity. She describes the little moments that God uses to speak to us. She encourages everyone to pause and look for those little moments. It is very true that those moments are there even when we do not see them. The key is to first look for them and then recognize them. It takes some effort, but it is worth it.

Susan has written a beautiful book about the beauty of God and the tiny moments in life that will catch us off guard. She calls them "sneeze moments." This book is completely practical and she is honest and forthcoming in her writing. I highly recommend this to men and women, study groups, prayer circles, youth groups... everyone should read this book. It is a work of literary art.

For more information visit Susan's site, Closer Than Your Skin, and find out more. Plus, there is a complete study / discussion guide for solo reading or group discussions. Believe me, it is worth the time to read this book!
